Arriach has lots of sunshine
Arriach is a small, peaceful mountain village. A healthy resort, it lies at an altitude of 911 m and is Carinthia’s geographical centre. Mountains form natural borders here: Gerlitzen (1,911 m) to the south and Wöllaner Nock to the north.
Thanks to the elevated location well away from motorways and other busy roads, the air quality in Arriach is excellent. Carinthia is blessed with the most sunshine hours: 2,100 a year on average.
Its proximity to the province’s recreational lakes, the many sights, attractions and famous Gerlitzen-Arriach ski area make the village attractive both in summer and winter. |

The walk to Carinthia’s geographical centre
Medium-difficult route.
Walking time: about 2 hours to the centre.
The starting point is the Mittelpunkt car park. Set off on the farm trail to Smoliner, then shortly after it turn right and follow the Mittelpunkt signs (marked centre of Carinthia). The path will take you through woods and meadows with stunning panoramic views of the Karawanken Range, and on to the Laastädter Wasserspielen (well with drinking water).
At the centre you can take a picture and post it to the internet – at the touch of a button. It will then be on the Arriach website for viewing on your own computer at home or sending as an e-card. There are three options for the way back:
- Same way back to Arriach (approx. 1½ hours)
- To the candelabra spruce via Laastadt – Sauboden to Arriach (approx. 1½ hours)
- Continue on the farm trail via Wöllan and Dreihofen to Arriach (approx. 3½ hours)

Swimming, sunbathing and more…
Carinthia has an amazing long-term average of 2,100 sunshine hours a year. Just as well that you can go for a refreshing swim in the region’s seven lakes – the largest being Lake Ossiach, Lake Faak and Lake Afritz. What accounts for the long hours of sunshine is that the area is so close to Italy. Luckily, it is only about 10 minutes’ drive from the Pilsachhof relaxing retreat to the lakeside resort of Afritz or Lake Ossiach.
We will be happy to provide information on the water sports and cruises available in the vicinity. You can also enjoy a soothing swim at the famous Warmbad-Villach thermal baths.

Sunny prospects for flying models
Model aircraft enthusiasts come from all over Europe because of the excellent thermals on Wöllaner Nock. Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost province, is blessed with the most sunshine hours: 2,100 a year on average. Only 15 km away lies Villach, which attracts visitors with its Mediterranean flair (close to Italy and Slovenia), historic interest, cultural events and Warmbad-Villach spa and thermal baths. |
